Will Your Menu Dictate Your Restaurant Tables Layout?

September 23rd, 2009 · No Comments

It may surprise you to know that a restaurant tables layout can be heavily affected by the menu - and I am not talking about the size of your printed menu. What sort of meals are you going to be serving? Those meals can affect table size and table size influences your layout.

Some ethnic menus require the use of several platters along with a plate for each diner. A standard table for two may not be big enough; likewise a standard table for four. In fact, you may have to consider using a standard table for four just for two diners. A larger table for four, five or six diners.

Not only does this then effect your table layout, it also affects how many chairs you can have and with it how many diners you accommodate at any one time. This affect then runs through the entire business. If the number of diners being served has to reduce by ten percent because of the larger table sizes - think about the consequences.

You may have to adjust expected cash flows. You may require less wait staff, perhaps even fewer kitchen hands. Less cash flow may also mean a reduced net profit at the end of the day. These can be the result of reducing the number of tables, and consequently diners, in your restaurant.

As you can see, making a slight error in the size of a table when first planning your budgets can have a severe affect on your business. When determining your restaurant tables layout - be sure to include your menu in your plans. If there are going to be several platters served at once, do a trial to see what tables are best suited. Then put in place a restaurant tables layout that accounts for the right sized tables. Be sure to also check your budgets and forward planning is based on the final number of right sized tables!
