Table tops at your restaurant are the “intermediary” between your food and your customer. They count and when deciding you need to put your time and energy into finding one that is functional and conveys the feel of your restaurant.
Functionality of course is a priority. You want to choose a sturdy table top that allows the allotted space for dishes. One major pet peeve for most customers is the rocking table top, due to the base of the table not being adjusted properly. The dreaded “matchbook” trick is unprofessional and annoying (that’s when you use a matchbook to steady a rocking table…bad form!)
The amount of space on the table top matters as well. If you are choosing oversized dishes for your restaurant but choosing small tabletops, you may in for a problem. You want a table top that comfortably fits your plates, with room for extras (such as bread baskets, glasses, silverware). It’s important to have a spacious feel to your tabletop, even when you don’t have tons of space. This gives the customer a feeling of comfort and space.
What do you want your tabletop made out of? If you go with a type of wood, you’ll need to address the fact that it needs to be protected properly. Budget is often a concern for a restaurant owner, so that often dictates your choice. But budget needn’t stop you from choosing something elegant and functional. Take your time in deciding because your choice will be one you’ll have to live and work with.
Again, a table top is a “go-between” for your food and your customer and your choice matters!
