So much effort is often placed in getting the top of the restaurant tables design right while the base is often ignored. The number of times I have banged my knees on hard metal legs at the corners of tables is countless - and a painful reminder to forget that restaurant next time I dine out.
Table bases are equally as important as the table top. Obviously, they need to be functional and do the job of holding the table top up. Having said that, there are thousands of designs available that use a central base rather than four legs. For diners, this is far more comfortable. You can get in and out of your seat with ease since there is no need to negotiate a table leg.
You may feel that a central base may take away from the intimacy of dining - you forget the ingenuity of mankind. We can still play footsie under the table - even with a central base. For diners’ comfort, they are much more preferred over four (or more) table legs.
An added benefit of a central base is that table staff and other patrons have nothing to accidentally kick as they serve or pass by - another annoyance of many diners. There is nothing worse than trying to enjoy your soup and someone walks by and catches the leg of the table with their feet.
When it comes to looks, it should be remembered that from a distance, the restaurant table’s design cannot be seen - however the table base can be. Paying a little attention to restaurant table bases can pay off when you consider look and diner appreciation. Never discount what may appear to be a trivial point - often they are not trivial and restaurant table bases are a classic case.
