Resurfacing Old Restaurant Furniture

August 3rd, 2009 · No Comments

There comes a time when your restaurant furniture starts to look tattered and well worn. Tables may have scratches that are too deep to polish out. The original wood stain finish may now be stained a lovely hue of colors that in no way resembles the original colors, and your chair legs kicked back to bare paint.

For some restaurant owners, the temptation is there to simply have the furniture taken away and resurfaced. That can be an option in many cases, however, in some cases you are only delaying the inevitable - at some stage that furniture will need replacing. In fact, taking the resurfacing route may be the more expensive solution.

If you take into account the cost of transporting that furniture and having it resurfaced together with the cost of having that furniture missing for days or even weeks - the cost can certainly add up. Having the furniture missing is of course a hidden cost. It is not costing you in out of pocket expenses, but it is costing you in lack of seating and reduced customer numbers.

There is a second hidden cost also associated with resurfacing. Restaurant furniture cannot be resurfaced for ever. Eventually the furniture will be too far gone to resurface and is only suitable for firewood. This means you will have zero resale value and the cost of disposal.

Taking another option can be far more viable financially. Rather than resurfacing, buy new restaurant furniture to replace the old. Your old furniture will have some resale value so sell it off to help pay for the new restaurant. You will find in the long run that buying in new furniture is no more expensive than having your old furniture resurfaced. You have the added benefit of modern construction techniques and warranties should something go wrong. I know which option I would prefer.
