When thinking of restaurant furniture, we often stop at tables and chairs. However, there are many accessories that should also be included and they should all match the general decor of your restaurant.
Accessories include items like coat racks, food serving trolleys and sideboards. Even the front counter needs to fit in with the general feel of your restaurant. Remember, that is often the first thing your diner sees when they arrive through your front door.
Why are these accessories important? Every piece of restaurant furniture sends a message. If it stands out and looks out of place then it upsets the whole balance of your restaurant. Your diners arrive through the front door and everything gets a once over as they make their way to their tables. It’s a human trait - we have to check things out and mentally give them our approval.
You would be surprised what our eyes see without even registering in our conscious thoughts - unless it looks out of place. You may feel that a coat rack is just a coat rack - and it is. But I saw it - over there in the corner. It fits in nicely with the decor so, unless I have a coat and a need for the coat rack, my brain ignored it. However, if it stands out and looks strange, not only did I notice, I am bound to mention it to whomever is accompanying me.
Accessories generally serve a purpose. They hold coats (although sometimes I am sure they are just for show), they help to keep food warm or they may be used to store cutlery, condiments and the multitude of odds and ends that are required in a restaurant. Normally, unless you are making a statement, they should blend in with the general decor to the point of being ‘out of sight - out of mind’.
Your restaurant furniture is made of so much more than just tables and chairs. It includes everything, from the smallest accessory such as a candlestick holder to your front counter. Get the balance right and your diners will concentrate on the real reason for visiting - to enjoy your food.
