Who ever thinks about restaurant furniture legs? Do you? No? Good! That’s the way it should be. Legs are one of those items that shouldn’t be noticed, and if they are, at least it’s in a complimentary way.
Take the humble table. It can have four legs, or it can sit on a pedestal. Bar stools are the same. Four long slender legs, or a nice plump pedestal that takes the weight with ease. Like I said, who thinks about the legs on their table when they sit down in a restaurant?
As a restaurant owner I would be worried if diners were noticing the legs on their table. It can only mean one thing normally - they are getting in the way or making their dining experience uncomfortable. That is what it all boils down to - how comfortable can you make your diners? If you are serving fantastic food then you want them talking about that.
As with all restaurant furniture, there are pluses and minuses to both styles. Legs are notorious for getting in the way when trying to sit or leave a table. Once you are seated, they are generally fine. Pedestals on the other hand allow for free access in and out. However, unless designed correctly, they can be easy to tip over, particularly if you have a diner eating solo.
Pedestals can sometimes get in the way of romance, but only if the pedestal base is so thick that people cannot get their feet around them. Perhaps we need pedestals with a large cutout in the base - just so people can play footsies under the table.
What should you use in your restaurant? It’s most certainly up to you. Legs are the traditional styles while pedestal restaurant table bases are the more modern approach. What do you prefer? For me, I don’t really care what sort of legs you have, but make my dining experience a great one and I am sure to put you on a pedestal!
