Buying restaurant furniture is a costly exercise so your furniture should be treated as a reasonably valuable asset. Like all assets, they need constant attention and maintenance to ensure they always represent the business well. Let’s face it, if you visited a restaurant where the furniture was dirty and in disrepair, there is a good chance you may feel the same about the food and leave.
Metal furniture can be one of the easiest to maintain and keep clean. Most metals are impervious to stains so a good wash with warm soapy water is often all that is needed. Like all restaurant furniture, special care is needed near joints as food and other matter can accumulate. Metal furniture will generally withstand a good scrub with a medium brush to remove an accumulation of debris.
What is not generally required is any special polish. There are many different commercial polishes available and they do perform reasonably well. However, a light coating of wax every now and then is all that is really required. Once applied, it needs to be well polished again. It leaves the surface bright and shiny but what you cannot see is a very thin layer of wax. This acts as a barrier against external factors. This can be handy if you have an outdoor eating area that is close to salt air like those found near beaches. The wax can help fight off the effects of salt and help to prevent early rusting - even with stainless steel.
Apart from the occasional waxing, metal furniture just needs a regular wipe down. If using a strong detergent, cut back a little on how much you are using and use a clean damp cloth to wipe away the detergent. A quick polish with a dry cloth and you’re done.
We often buy restaurant furniture with looks and function in mind. It is not until we unpack and set up that we start to consider maintenance and care of the furniture. Start with any instructions from the manufacturer - they know how their product should be treated to get the utmost wear. Metal restaurant furniture looks good, is quite functional, and is easy to maintain.
