Wood has been a popular choice for restaurant furniture since restaurants first began. Modern wooden furniture is far more sophisticated now compared to a hundred years ago or more. However, although sophisticated in looks and construction, wooden furniture care hasn’t changed much in the last 50 years.
The first piece of advice I offer on caring for wooden restaurant furniture is to read the manufacturer’s guide first. They often offer tips on how to keep your furniture looking like new. If your furniture didn’t come with any tips, the following may help.
- Dust frequently with a clean lightly dampened cloth
- Use mild detergents when wiping clean
- If there is a build up of old polish, grease or dirt, use methylated spirits to clean the surface
- For oil-based finishes, apply beeswax once or twice a year and rub in well - ensure the surface is clean first
- Avoid using harsh scourers or steel wool
If you have any doubts about any products, do a test first. Apply the product - for example, methylated spirits - to the underside or somewhere that is not visible. Be sure to test like with like. Often the underside is not finished like the top. If that is the case, select a very small area either on the side or in the center to test.
Oil-based surfaces need a good clean before applying beeswax. Make sure the surface is completely dry before applying. If you have any doubts as to whether or not a surface is oil based, find a test area and place a few drops of linseed oil - if the finish absorbs the oil then it is quite possible it is an oil-based finish. If the drops are repelled and maintain the droplet appearance, chances are it is a harder finish such as varnish, shellac or polyurethane.
Timber furniture can be very elegant and really help to establish the atmosphere in a restaurant. Keeping it clean and in original condition can be difficult given the workout it often receives. Constant care will ensure your wooden restaurant furniture lasts years and years.
