When sitting down to decide your restaurant furniture layout, what factors do you take into consideration? Maximizing space is always important as is the provision of adequate walking space for your patrons. But what about your employees?
Workplace safety is an important issue these days and impacts on just about everything we do in the workplace. This is true whether you employ one casual to help out when busy, or a hundred employees in a busy hotel/restaurant. Have you considered workplace safety in your restaurant furniture layout? In fact, are you aware of any legal responsibilities when it comes to workplace safety?
These days, every state has some sort of workplace safety legislation in place. Whilst it may not mention restaurants by business category, there will be generic legislation that will affect all workplaces. A good example would be a fire extinguisher. No, it’s not part of your restaurant furniture, however, does your restaurant furniture impact on the ease of access to that fire extinguisher?
Other considerations include the ease of access for wait staff carrying laden serving trays. Can they access the servery with ease? Can they serve your patrons with ease? It is not an easy task organizing your furniture in such a way that every inch is accounted for.
As a restaurant owner, when arranging your restaurant furniture layout, don’t sacrifice workplace safety for the sake of an extra table or two. That extra table may bring in extra income initially, but should a workplace accident arise, you may find the final costs far exceeding the income generated.
