Restaurant Chairs That Cater To Families

June 10th, 2009 · No Comments

Some restaurants don’t make it obvious they don’t want families. Others make it obvious that they do welcome families. How can I tell the difference? It’s all in the seating. Is the seating provided going to be suitable for children or is there a lack of youth seating altogether.

There are two things to look for. The first is whether or not there are any high chairs clearly visible. Some restaurants tuck them away out of site, but, by the time you get to your table, there is the baby high chair waiting. Another sign I look for is in the chairs themselves. Are they plush and easily stained - you can bet little Johnny will surely spill something. If the chairs are solidly built then spills are easily cleaned up.

When catering to families, having high chairs is a must. They are, however, quite inconvenient, but there are a few simple tips to follow that will ensure happy families with the least amount of inconvenience possible.

  • Look for stackable baby high chairs - they are available
  • Solid construction is also a must - mom has to feel that her little one is going to be safe
  • Safety belts - they add to the security factor

Another factor to look at is spread. Go for width spread rather than depth. Most domestic high chairs have a narrow width spread and use a depth spread of the legs to prevent tip overs (the legs are angled to the back for stability) - these are unsuitable in restaurants where walking space is at a premium - the back legs protrude well out from the table and could trip unsuspecting feet.

The finish should be easily washable. Avoid chairs for children that have a fabric finish. Children of all ages cannot help themselves - they spill and nothing absorbs spills like fabric. Stained fabric is also unsightly and looks unprofessional.

Your aim is to provide a seat that doesn’t intrude into walking spaces and is comfortable for the child whilst satisfying the mother’s concern for safety. You also want a chair that doesn’t take up too much space, so stackables are a must. Provide seating that welcomes families and you will find them returning time after time - they really do appreciate it.
