Caring For Outdoor Furniture Once The Sun’s Gone Down

October 15th, 2009 · No Comments

In the summer months when the nights are barmy, outdoor dining is at its most popular and your outdoor furniture is bound to get a good workout. All good things do come to an end and the end of summer hails fall and that of course signals the imminent arrival of winter.

When I talk about the sun going down, I am referring more to the onset of winter when perhaps you need to back away your outdoor furniture until the weather conditions return to more favorable outdoor dining. Before packing that furniture away, there are a number of things you should do to ensure it survives winter and is ready to use when summer returns.

Caring for Outdoor Furniture Prior To Storage

  • Ensure all tables and chairs are cleaned well, paying particular attention to areas where food may be trapped.
  • Ensure all tables and chairs are thoroughly dry before storage. Dampness can lead to mold and mildew which can stain and/or ruin your outdoor furniture.
  • Apply a little machine oil to movable metal areas. This will help to protect the metal and ensure free movement when taken out of storage.
  • Once your outdoor furniture has been placed into storage, cover it with a dust sheet to ensure dust and dirt doesn’t collect.

These steps are easy to undertake. Sometimes too easy. This can lead to lapses in attention to detail. Ensuring your furniture is completely dry is one good example. Having large mildew stains on your furniture is not a pretty site when you bring it out ready for use again.

Pay attention to the small details when storing your outdoor furniture and it will be ready to serve you again next summer. In fact, by looking after your outdoor furniture, it should give you good service for many years to come.
