Why New Trends In Restaurant Furniture Are So Hard To Follow

September 5th, 2009 · No Comments

Most people want to follow what is trendy. The reasons are very simple - trendy means popular so if you follow new trends in restaurant furniture then you are providing your customers with what they want - right? Perhaps not!

First, it’s very difficult to know what is ‘trendy’ and what isn’t and there are a number of reasons for this. Some of those reasons include:

Themed restaurants - themed restaurants obviously cannot follow overall trends. They may be able to follow trends from within their theme. For example, there may be a trend to use particular style of furniture within Mexican restaurants. However, if you’re the only Mexican restaurant in town, do you really need to follow the new trend?

Restaurant styles - themed restaurants have a theme - that is pretty obvious. A restaurant style is a little different in that it may be modern, retro, old fashioned etc. You can still have a theme and a style. For example, a modern Mexican restaurant or an old fashioned Mexican restaurant. Each style will have a general trend too. That is, modern may be bright colors and aluminum - that doesn’t mean your restaurant has to be bright colors and aluminum.

Just with these two examples you can see that identifying a trend can be difficult, particularly if your restaurant has both a theme and a style. The more you narrow your restaurant’s look, the less likely you are to see any major changes in trends. A final example: a modern Mexican restaurant that targets the 18-25 age group. This is now a very narrow target - can you identify a furniture trend? Possibly, but it can be hard to follow.

If your restaurant is working, you are doing a regular trade and your customers are happy, don’t worry too much about following new trends in restaurant furniture too closely. Be aware of it, as you have trends in food and trends in peoples habits. They all impact on your restaurant, but in different degrees - your restaurant furniture being the least impact.
