As a bar afficianado, nothing makes me feel more relaxed than a cool, inviting lounge with great service and comfortable furniture. Ironically, I’m not a heavy drinker. I sip on one martini and follow it with a glass of club soda and lime. I just really like the atmosphere.
A good bar is cool and relaxed and inviting. I walk in and it does the rest. The bartender becomes the caretaker for the hour and I can sit on a comfy stool and read my paper in peace. Even if it’s a bustling bar, somehow it still seems relaxing to me. Perhaps its because bars are social places. And we are social animals. We like people, whether we want to admit it or not.
Whether I go with a friend or by myself, there is solace to be found at a local pub. The one near me is old as the hills but that’s what makes it so comfortable. The furniture is old (or at least old-looking) for comfortable and the decor is very retro (retro in the old sense, not in the hip sense!) I see the same people there, when I go after work on Fridays, and something about that constant sameness is very comforting to me.
Sometimes I order a Guiness in the winter months but most of the time I stick with my tried and true order, which the bartender starts making when I enter the door. It’s good in this day and age to keep the tradition of pubs and bars alive. It’s where we get our social fix!
