If you want to upgrade your bar to something more than just ‘a bar’ then forget using bar furniture, in fact change your mind set and stop calling it a bar. Instead, turn it into a lounge. There is something, to use a English term, ‘posh’ about having a lounge instead of a bar.
Of course, if you are going to upgrade to a lounge, the first thing you need to do is replace your old bar furniture with modern lounge furniture. Armchairs, sofas, even ottomans if you have the space. Of course, rather than a bar to lean on, small side tables to hold drinks.
The question is, would it be viable? If you have a bar attached to your restaurant that isn’t well patronized then changing to a lounge may well change that. Lower the lighting, have soft background music and the difference can be quite dramatic. Your patrons may not like the change, but then you didn’t have to many. With the change you may find a new group of patrons flooding in.
There are bars that a big enough to accommodate both. Bar stools at the bar and comfortable easy chairs around the walls. That is very much the best of both worlds and caters to people with a wider range of tastes.
If your bar isn’t working for you, take out the bar furniture and replace it with comfortable lounge furniture and turn your tired old bar into a brand new upmarket lounge.
